This leaflet, in addition to the Document “CODEPEH 2021 Recommendations” (forthcoming), addresses a scientific review of the recent scientific evidence on hearing loss associated with another disability (AD+), providing recommendations for action on the detection and diagnosis of deaf children with associated disabilities, as well as children with other types of disability with additional deafness, in order to provide guidelines for the adaptation of care programmes for these children.

The situation of these children is known in scientific literature as children who are deaf or hard hearing plus, although the term hearing loss and associated disabilities (AD+) is preferable.

About 40% of deaf children have an additional developmental disorder or a major medical problem. There are also children with another type of disability already diagnosed who do not reach the expected developmental milestones, in which an associated deafness must be ruled out.
