Neonatal hearing screening is now routinely performed in many of the regional health systems in Spain. Despite the significant expansion of hearing loss screening since 2000, its feasibility and the benefits of early identification and intervention, there are still significant challenges to be had. In this article, the Commission for the Early Detection of Hearing loss (CODEPEH) updates the recommendations deemed important for the future development of early detection and intervention systems in the following areas: screening protocols, audiological assessment, medical assessment, early intervention and follow-up and, finally, quality control.

The final considerations of the document include a list of operational proposals that the Commission recommends in order to meet the ultimate goal of the Programme.
